New Zealand 2007

All of these pictures were shot while traveling with a group led by John and Kathy Baker ( http://www.travelimages.com) between November 13th and November 26th, 2007. Except for one shot the day before the trip from a kayak in the Abel Tasman National Park. We traveled south from Christchurch past Dunedin, then west to Te Anau and Milford Sound, then north to Mount Cook, stopping every 10 minutes to shoot something. These are the best of the 2500+ shots I took.

My Bag for the trip:
1D III, 10D (backup, not used), 16-35 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L, 50 f1.8, 100 f2.8 Macro, 2x teleconverter, 580 EX Flash, (one shot uses a borrowed 500 f4 - thanks Barun)

New Zealand

  • These are actually rocks, called the Moeraki Boulders. Their formation is still unexplained. We had dawn light for less than 5 minutes, so I made the best of it.
  • We arrived at dawn in Milford Sound. However, we were completely socked in. After breakfast as we were about to seek other locations, the clouds began to clear. This is what it looked like by the time I made it back to the water's edge.
  • Another Moeraki Boulder.
  • This is my favorite of the Moeraki Boulders. Its a long exposure and the "mist" is just the moving waves.
  • One more boulder pic, because they are just so photogenic. Another long exposure, in this case with the waves actually lapping around my tripod legs.
  • Keas are parrots that live in the New Zealand mountains, up around the snow line.
  • A yellow-eyed penguin on her (his?) way back to the family after a long day at sea fishing. Shot from an underground blind at a preserve. The wooden bridge in the background covers the underground walkway.
  • 2 Shags playing (courting?). Barun was kind enough to briefly let me try his 500 f4 and now I think I need one (and of course a suitcase with wheels to carry it).
  • The water really is this color. Promise.
  • I am fascinated by the patterns formed by sea-side trees. My fellow travelers were worried as I climbed down the cliff and perched to get this shot, trying desperately to keep my shoes out of the frame.

  • Large parts of the trip were consumed with searching for lupines. For the most part we were a week too early. These are coming out, but still several days away from fully open.
  • New Zealand has an immense selection of native ferns. I used an off-camera flash to light this one more fully.
  • More ferns, from the side this time. Also flash-lit. No hope of getting every one into focus (I'm already at f22).

  • A cathedral in Dunedin. I think it fits in well with the "nature" shots of similar shapes against the sky.

  • Shot from a snowfield high up opposite Aoraki (Mt. Cook). We climbed there. Honest. (OK, we took a helicopter).

It's related with meteor impact cooking. There are many other examples all around the world, sometimes related with hoodoos (Gallup USA).

Beautiful detail in these boulders. I love the warm glow of the rising sun.
